Sparks Fly!

Writer: Paul RideoutPaul Rideout

I’ve been rebuilding my van.  It's been quite a process.  A lot of work to do, but definitely worth it. As I’ve been going through the rebuilding process I have had to reroute some wiring.  As I was doing so, a spark went off and shocked me (no pun intended).  I was pretty afraid of touching that wire and continuing my course of work because of that.  I had a fear and a reverence for the power that I was working with.  Eventually, I put in some precautions to make sure that wouldn't happen again and began my work on the routing once more.

I heard a similar story happened to one of my friends except on a grander scale.  He told me he was working with some 480v machines at his work.  As he began to do some wiring he did not de-energize the system.  While working with some wires he said a spark went off.  He said this spark was so bright that it blinded him for a minute and sent him tumbling backwards.  He said the electricity from the machine was more powerful than he’d seen before.  He thanked God that he didn’t actually touch any of the current because he would have not survived.

These two events remind me of Isaiah 6 when Yahweh appears to Isaiah.  He saw the glory of the LORD.  The shekinah glory blew him away. He said he was unworthy to be before such a presence.  It also reminds me of the scene in the book of the Revelation of Jesus Christ when Jesus appears before John and he falls to his stomach as if dead because of his presence.  The glory of God is a powerful and awful thing.  It is full of wonder, and fear.  Each man when seeing the glory of Yahweh was taken aback and frightened at the revelation.  Just like the electricity's shocking event changed our perspective of the power of the machines my friend and I were working with, the presence of God’s glory appearing to these men changed their view, wonder, and reverence for God.  They saw themselves more clearly because of seeing the pure holiness of the one before them. But what’s so amazing about these two scenes is that they are told not to fear (or a response to show it is okay to be in the presence of the Yahweh). This is because God desires relationship with his creation. And he has made a way so that we may have it.  Isn’t that amazing!  Jesus desired this so much that he gave his life so that we might have life in him.

So I ask you this question, “Have you had an encounter with God?”  If not I pray that you would meet him.  He has revealed himself in the scriptures and in them you will find life by meeting Jesus.

I saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple…“Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.”...“See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.” Isaiah 6:1-7

When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on me and said: “Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. Revelation 1:17
